How I Get My Hair to Look Shiny (Even Though It’s Naturally Curly & Frizzy)

I get asked about my hair all the time — especially on days when I wear it smooth and shiny — and it always makes me smile because the truth is… my natural hair is super curly, dry, and frizzy. It definitely takes work, but over the years I’ve learned what really makes a difference. And once I found my little routine, the shine just started showing up.

How I Get My Hair to Look Shiny (Even Though It’s Naturally Curly & Frizzy)

I wash my hair about 2–3 times a week, which helps keep my natural oils balanced and prevents it from getting even drier.

1. My at-home color really helps with shine

I dye my hair using L’Oréal Preference in Dark Brown, and I swear this color has a built-in glow to it. Even right after I rinse it out, my hair looks richer and healthier. It gives me that deep, glossy brunette shade that’s so pretty in photos — especially natural light.

2. My go-to products: Olaplex, Oribe & Roz (Updated)

This is the trio that changed everything:

I always use a heat protector before styling, and if I want a little extra gleam, I’ll add a tiny bit of oil after styling — just a touch on the ends.

You have to try this Glassy Smooth Blowdry by Chris McMillian. Amazing product!

3. The hairspray that keeps the shine (not the crunch)

I’ve tried so many over the years, and the one I always go back to is COLOR WOW Cult Favorite Firm + Flexible Hairspray. It keeps everything in place without making your hair look stiff or dull. It’s honestly amazing for keeping a blowout smooth in Florida humidity.

4. Tools matter more than we think

When I really want that shiny, “polished but still soft” hair, this is my setup:

I like to take my time with the blowout — smoothing as I go — because that’s where most of the shine comes from.

I hope this helps if you’ve been wanting glossy, healthy-looking hair! It took me years to find what works for my curly, frizzy texture, but once I found my rhythm, everything changed.

What’s one hair product you swear by for shine or smoothing? I’d love to try your favorites!
