The Overlooked Skincare Step That’s Making a Big Difference

I went to Nantucket with no plans—here’s what happened. Other than booking the stay and flights ahead of time, we enjoyed a laidback visit.

I’ve always been good about taking care of my face — gentle cleansers, serums, SPF — but when it came to my feet, I’ll admit… they didn’t always get the same love. Lately, though, they’ve been impossible to ignore. Out of nowhere, my heels started feeling so dry and cracked you’d think I never moisturized a day in my life. I’m pretty sure menopause is playing a role here (oh, the fun surprises it brings), but whatever the cause, it wasn’t cute — and it definitely wasn’t comfortable.

The turning point? I finally decided to treat my feet like part of my skincare routine instead of an afterthought. Now, every morning and night, I apply Aquaphor generously to my heels and the driest spots. I also use a foot file gently about once a week after soaking my feet, just to smooth everything out without being harsh.

The difference in just a couple of weeks has been huge. My skin feels softer, the cracks are healing, and I’m no longer hiding my feet in closed-toe shoes (even though it’s still sandal weather here in Miami).

If you’ve been dealing with dryness — whether it’s from summer sandals, beach days, or hormonal changes — I can’t recommend this little ritual enough. It’s quick, it’s inexpensive, and it’s making me feel more confident in every pair of shoes I own.

A quick note: If you have diabetes, please see a podiatrist for foot care before trying any at-home treatments.
