Happy almost Valentine’s Day! I always get a little excited about Valentine’s Day and will put together some treats for my boys and husband to enjoy. I also love to bake and this year I baked an early treat last weekend for them. These Valentine’s Day heart cookies are fun to make for your family. All you need is a packet of sugar cookie mix, a tub of buttercream frosting, red food coloring, and a heart cookie cutter.
The first thing you do is follow all of the instructions on the sugar cookie packet for making cut out cookies. Usually you just have to add some flour to the mix. Then, you roll out the dough onto a flat surface. I like to use this marble pastry board I bought at Williams Sonoma. Next, you use the heart cookie cutter to cut out hearts and place them on the baking pan. Bake as directed, making sure that they do no burn on the edges. I always cook them a little less than what the directions say. Finally, let the cookies cool before icing them.
I iced the cookies in different shades of pink by putting a different amount of red food coloring for each shade. In one of the shades, I only added one drop of food coloring, Then, for a lighter shade I added half of a drop, and so on to make a lighter shades of pink. You can buy different shades of pink food coloring, however my way is the economy route.
I hope you’re inspired to bake something sweet for your family this Valentine’s Day! No matter how old your kids are, they always enjoy a sweet treat from Mom! You can also bake these easy and delicious sugar cookie bars! Have a beautiful and blessed day my friends!
